BOOTMGR Missing error

Today, I was deploying Windows Server 2008 R2 using an image which I captured from another server using Sysprep and ImageX utilities.

After I deployed the image to my server using the same ImageX utility, and as soon as I started the server BOOM, got a startup error “BOOTMGR MISSING”

To fix this issue, I started my server using a WinPE CD to the Windows Pre Installation Environment, and typed the following command

BCDBOOT C:\Windows

Restart the server

That fixed the issue

Back in the day when reading hour was first introduced to my class. Each student was required to read the book and then share with the class on what you have read. Hence, story-telling was evolved. When I was in the fourth grade selected students was required to share their favorite part of the book. And also adding introduction, body and conclusion to their story-telling. Remembering my first time having to speak in front of the class with a book in my hand and the other hand shifting nervously fiddling the change in my pockets.

That was the good ol' 1999's era. Now the classroom still has it's desks and chairs. But the methodology of teaching now has introduced technology into the classrooms. When I started high-school, my science teacher would used her projector to show her notes. And I found that method quite interesting. I was bedazzled by colors, arrows and signs that shown. It beats than having to go through black and white texts and images on the mid-evil textbooks. huhu.

Ever wondered why babies, kids and teens are so fascinated by a world full of colour? If you give babies a chance to choose between a) a book that only has black and white and b) a toy that all the seven colours of the rainbow? Which toy would you think the baby would choose?

In a library, what books do you think a child will choose? a) Newspaper that is printed in black and white b) a book filled with bright colours.

It has the same concept in school. Children wants to learn but they tire-out really easily. They need their minds to be enticed to maintain the level of attention. Have you heard of a mood ring? Where the mood ring identifies the colour of yo're mood? Did you know that certain colours play a role in the classroom too? It can be a source of motivation for students and can help them freshen up their moods. Did you ever hear about the 9 dot games. I have experience this myself when I went to a workshop. And to my surprise I could not answer the question. However, younger students are able to answer the question because their way of thinking and imagination is not limited. There are no boxes and boundaries in the their minds that limits them to getting the answer.
Thinking upon your feet, it also promotes time-management since there is a limited time only when using the photostory. And it gives the students the chance the chance to really think about what they want to include in their story.

Life after high-school? Whoa, when I was a student I though that working would be spectacular rather than studying. And once I started working, it is the other way round. Haha. Walking through the halls of my previous high-school it was like Deja-Vu all over again. Remembering the places where I used to sit down and eat with my friends. Walking pass my classrooms hit home to me. High-school life was like a long forgotten past life. Anyhoots, the purpose of my writing this blog was to show how the leaning system before and after technology has been introduced. I can tell that the internet has played a huge influence on the student's these days, Internet has become apart of their lives and also has of their everyday activity.Those activities can be beneficial to them as long the intentions are the decisions are honest and correct. Hey a good cause is an investment for the future.

Using Multiple Live ID’s with Internet Explorer

One of my common task at work involves me to sign in to multiple Microsoft websites using different Live ID’s (.NET Passport addresses). The problem is that usually I have, like 15-20 Internet Explorer tabs open and sometimes one of these tabs uses one Live ID which I have signed in with, and when I try to open a new site and sign in with another Live ID, the newly opened site uses the already used Live ID, so have to go through every tab and sign-out and then use the other Live ID to sign in, this is a tedious process and a headache at times.

One easy way to solve this is Open a new browsing session. To do this

On the Internet Explorer window, click File => and then click New Session

This will enable you to start a new browsing session in which you will be able to use different Live ID’s.

Windows 8 (Developer Preview Pre-Beta) Installation Step by Step

This is what I have been waiting for quite some time now an official version of Windows 8 to try it out. After they released the Developer Preview Pre-beta version of Windows 8 yesterday at the BUILD conference I managed to download the ISO.

Since it was a Pre-Beta I started to install on top of a Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V machine ( I know the touch features – but something I want to sacrifice until later)

I created a new hyper-V virtual machine and started to install and it was almost the same as a Windows 7 installation except for the Windows 7 starting splash screen being replaced with another (refer screen shot below)

Today AITI with the collaboration with Tech One Global has manage to visit a school in Tutong district this morning to educate the youth today with the Cyber Security & Internet Etiquette Awareness Program. Knowledge can be the first line defense by equipping them with the knowledge of the importance of being a good net citizen and awareness of cyber security and safety in the digital world.

PowerShell “cannot be loaded because the execution of scripts is disabled on this system” error

Recently after a Windows Server 2008R2 implementation I had to use the new Microsoft Command Shell the so called “Windows PowerShell” to run a script. After installing the server I opened up notepad and wrote a simple script and as you’ll know I had to save the file with a PS1 extension so that PowerShell can execute the script. and I did save the file with the PS1 extension.

As soon as Opened PowerShell and typed the path to the PS1 file and press enter, I got an error as shown below

Which says “File <filepath> cannot be loaded because the execution of scripts is disabled on this system. Please see "get- help about_signing" for more details.”

If you get this error, don’t panic by default PowerShell is designed like this for security reasons, The Execution Policy which is in Windows PowerShell is set to Restricted which means none of the scripts will run (even if you write with your user credentials).

In Windows PowerShell type Get-ExecutionPolicy to verify

In order to be able to run scripts using Windows PowerShell type Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned

This would enable to run script using PowerShell on your computer

Windows 8 Hyper-V Requirements

According to the Official Blog post by Microsoft http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/09/07/bringing-hyper-v-to-windows-8.aspx to have Hyper-V on an upcoming Windows 8 Operating System you will need to meet certain requirements.

One of the requirements for Hyper-V is that it requires a 64-bit system that has Second Level Address Translation (SLAT). This is a feature that the current processors comes along with.

How do we check whether our existing systems/processors support this feature? this is the ultimate question

According to this blog Intel and AMD have different types of SLAT, Intel calls this Enhanced Page Tables (EPT) and AMD calls it as Nested Page Tables (NPT).

Microsoft Sysinternals has a tool called Coreinfo which can be downloaded here, using this tool we can view whether our processors support either one of EPT or NPT depending on the processor make.

Once you download the Coreinfo, extract the software to your C: drive. Open command prompt and navigate C:\ and type Coreinfo.exe –v

This command will give you whether your processor supports EPT or NPT

Hyper-V in Windows 8

As an IT Pro, we are required to do R&D a lot. At the rate of new technologies being implemented specially in the Microsoft arena we have to do a lot of research to be in par with the technology.

Mostly, what we do is virtualize the newly released products and test it out, but the common problem most of us face is that to have a descent virtualization solution such as hyper-v, we are compelled to install Windows Server as the base operating system.

I have a Lenovo W520 with a Core i7 vPro and 16GB of RAM and I run Windows Server 2008 R2 as my base OS, purely because I need to run Hyper-V. The Biggest problem I face is that once I enable Hyper-V, I cannot hibernate or put my Lenovo Notebook to sleep.

Hold on.. Microsoft just released a blog post on their Windows 8 Engineering Blog that Windows 8 will support Hyper-V on it. This is something super cool and most of the IT Pros out their will love this for sure. The best part is that hibernation/Sleep ill still be there even if you install Hyper-V on Windows 8

The requirement is that you will need to have a Windows 8 x64bit OS and a minimum of 4GB of RAM.

Cyber security team is here to save the day

There is no limitations when it comes to gaining knowledge. Today, Khaled, Illah and Rash, internes from ITB had their first unoffical presentation on cyber security. They were given about 30mis to 45 mins to prepare and conduct research on the stated topic.

Each has been given preparation slides and each one will deliver their presentation. People have their own unique talents and style of presenting. Khaled, Rash and Illah has the chance to step out from their comfort zone and do a presentation on a topic where they are given a chance to think upon their feet and think outside the box.

This is a good stepping stone for students to break the fear of stage fright and enhance their communication skills.

It is said that the number one fear among humans are public speaking. The thought of speaking in front of a crowd will make you feel giddy. You're heart pumping, you're palms sweating, you're knees buckling. It's the scariest thing to be the one to speak in front of people. And there is an itcy, bitcy tiny voice that might be going around in your head that says that you may mess up, you may forget you're lines you will do this instead of that. There will be no doubt, you will fell that way. Don't worry, it is natural to feel that way. You may wipe the sweat off your forehead now. huhu.

Once you start speaking and have good rounds of practice of what you are going to present it will be easy as it comes along.

Here are a few tips that might help you when you giving presentations or speeches:

1) Be confident, no matter if you miss you're lines do not panic. No one will know what you're speech is and what it will contain. If you feel that you are lost. Do not panic. Take a moment of pause and then take a long breath. And then continue.

2) Tone of voice, use a different tone of voice on main points or key points that you want to emphasize on.

3) Style of speech, how you say it. No matter how incredible the content of the speech is. If there is no style of speech, the content of the speech will look dull. You do not want your audience to be wiped-out. Every speaker has their own unique style. Finding a style that suits you. Practice the style and it will become second-nature to you.

4) Speaking another level of communication. But to maintain the audience's attention is another. Study you're audience and then use material or tools to capture their attention such as questions and answers.

5) Silence is golden in times where you want to emphasize on important key points.

6) Eyes of Fury, eye contact is essential, it's a sign that you are showing to the audience that I am here and I want to share an important message with you. It will make the audience have a sense of confidence in you.

7) Interacting with the audience, allow two way communication with the audience.

Remember, speaking is a work of art. You have the control of how you will convey the message along. Pick a style that you are comfortable with. Practice makes perfect. Before you know it, you will no longer need to refer to your speech notes.

Why Live@Edu?

Rasyiqah is sick and is unable to attend class. And their teacher has an assignment to give to her and four of her classmates to wok on a project. Since Rasyiqah was unable to attend the assignment briefing on what are the requirements for the project. Her classmates can e-mail her and also create an online meeting do discuss about the project. Now Rasyiqah will not be behind in her grades.

In the working environment, we need e-mail to communicate with our colleges or perhaps keep in contact with a boss who is outstation. Or even communicate with our clients. With the early exposure to e-mail and IT students can use this as a stepping stone. They can learn the etiquette on sending an e-mail to the teacher and other classmates. And these skills can be adapted to the working environment example: sending a report to the boss. I personally think with the implementing of the Live@Edu in schools can give many benefits to both teachers and students. Where students will have early exposures to the working environment and they can have the general idea on the importance of etiquette while communicating online. Had conducted a knowledge sharing in the office for the fresh batch of interns this year.

Microsoft Brunei is currently partnering with Ministry of Education of Brunei. To promote HOD +1 training that is given to all the selected teachers for the whole of Brunei. I have mentioned in my previous blog that Microsoft Mouse Mischief is used as a optional tool for teachers to use and implement in the classroom. Microsoft Mouse Mischief is apart of the HOD +1 package. What is HOD +1?

HOD +1 means Head of Department +1. It's a title that is given for this training. A training to train the educators of Brunei.

The teaching systems now is more advance with the SPN21. And teaching methods have also changed across the time. Technology is now an essential part of our lives. What Microsoft has offered is to make the teaching methods more adaptable with the usage of IT. Hence, the tools introduced in HOD +1 is an option for the teachers to try out and experiment.

In HOD +1 has introduced to softwares such as:

1) Photo Story 3, a new way of story telling with Digital story-telling

2) Microsoft Mouse Mischief

3) Maths Add-in

4) Bing Search

5) Bing Translator

6) World wide telescope

7) Bing Map

8) Auto Collage

Each software has their own specific functions for all different types of subjects that can be used for both primary and secondary students.

Microsoft is trying to promote the 21st Century skills so that students are more prepared for the working environment after they have left school. These 21st century skills are as follows:

1) Creativity, for students to be able to think outside of the box.

2) Critical Thinking, for students to be able to think upon their feet and do not rely on spoon-feeding information that they have gained.

3) Collaboration, to promote team-work and to put their communication skills to the test.

4) Assessments, introducing ICT skills into the assessments.

5) Organization, for teachers to organizing their lesson plans by using onenote. This can also be used by students to proper manage their notes too.

With this introduced to the teachers, it will help them prepare their students not just in building their ICT skills but also to prepare them for the real world.

For example: With the usage of Live@Edu the students and teachers can stay connected online. Using their school e-mail address teacher can assign students homework by sending e-mails to their students. Or let's say that the student has forgotten to print-out the assignment to submit to the teacher tomorrow. No fear, if the student has saved her assisgnment in the Skydrive, then she or he can easily retrieve it from Skydrive. This also has an advantage to the students being exposure to IT. Students will learn more quicker and faster on the proper etiquette of sending e-mails. Very much like in the real world where using e-mails are part of the working world.

One of the major challanges that the 21st century teachers encoutner in today's learning system is to maintain the attention of their students. Compare the students from my time when we had heaps and heaps of textbooks. All in black and white texts in very long and long paragraphs. Back in my day, seldom did my textbooks had colourfull and attractive pictures to make the studying processing less than grey. It was said that implementing bright and attractive colours can help make the studying and learning more absorbable and digestivable.

But now with the technolgy both students and teachers can make it more sunny and bright in the classroom. When it comes to teaching, there is always one teacher and twenty to thirty students. And when classroom and homework is given to ensure that students will have the proper coverage on each topic and this can help the teachers to identify which students need more improvement and what topics to focus more on. Would you like to have a process of teaching where you can give out assesments and have the evaluation results on the spot? Yes, ladies and gentlemen. Results on the spot. Imagine that you have given out a topic to the students. And the normal proceudre is to give out classwork and also homework for the weekeneds after the topic has been conveyed to the students.

The above image shows how students can apply critical thinking, show their creativity and also interact with the studetns around them. Students gain more knowledge from the subject. But at the same time exposing the students to the world of IT. Introducing them to computing fundamentals.

As you can see, there are number of students who each has a mouse. This can also be done in a group. With this, students can benefit from team work. It will help them work out their communication and leadrship skills. Even the quietest and the most shy student will also be able to participate with confidence. With this intergrated into the classroom, it can help bright up the classroom and make it more lively.

Besides giving on the spot assesement, the Microsoft Mouse Mischeif works in many ways:

1) You can create slides with mulitiple questions.

2) Answers are given on the spot too after students have selected the answer, the correct answer will appear as a tick.

3) You can insert images.

4) With these tools, now teachers can identify which students are weak and need improvement.

A teacher from a private tution school, has tried implementing this into the classroom. And students have given feedback that they prefer exciting and creative new ways of learning such as this. Fatal Error C000003A Applying Update–While installing Service Pack 1 for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7

Recently I was installing Windows Server 2008 R2 on my server and while installing the service pack 1, I came across an issue. The server downloads the service pack and starts the installation and restarts, once it restarts it goes to a black screen mode where it displays on applying update, after a while the server comes to a halt and freezes. Restarting the server also does not help.

After some research I found the solution by following KB 975484

Brunei IT Pro User Group Meeting - June 2011

The Brunei IT Pro User Group Meeting for June 2011 was held yesterday at the Tech One Global Training Room (Knowledge Hub) around 5 p.m.

Todays topic was Deploying Windows 7 using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010. There was a presentation on Windows 7 as well as a detailed demonstration on how to create a Windows 7 image using MDT 2010, where the image includes other applications as well as several device drivers.

The next meeting will be on 29th of July 2011 and will be at the same venue. All are welcome for these sessions which are free..

Missing Screenshots in Problem Steps Recorder (PSR.EXE)

Like most of the IT Pro’s I too use PSR to capture screenshots for troubleshooting, documenting, blogging and other tasks which require to capture a series of screenshots. Most of the times when I use PSR I have been facing an issue. Once the recording is done and the file has been saved, when I open the .mht file most of the screenshot at the beginning will be missing and the one’s at last will be displayed.

You may have a message on the missing screenshot as “No screenshots were saved for this problem step”. The reason for this is that by default, PSR only saves the last 25 screenshots to help reduce the size of the capture file. If you require to capture more than 25 screenshots you may increase this number (to a maximum of 100)

To Increase, Open PSR with elevated rights, click on the highlighted arrow and select Settings

Change from number of recent screen captures 25 to a maximum of 100.
